Volvo C70 vs. Ford Mustang
Volvo C70 Overview
The sole convertible in Volvo’s lineup, the 2008 Volvo C70 offers an amazing retractable hardtop roof, a
powerful turbocharged engine, and svelte styling that combine luxury and refinement with the thrills of open-air motoring.
The C70 is available in one trim line - the T5 - which features a 2.4 liter turbocharged 5-cylinder engine that
makes 227 horsepower and 236 lb.-ft. of torque for ample acceleration and instant boost from the turbo when you need to pass or merge quickly. A
6-speed manual gearbox is the best transmission to get the maximum performance, while an available 5-speed automatic Geartronic transmission lets
you shift through the gears without a traditional clutch. Standard front-wheel drive offers good handling and control in all-season
driving.
Volvo is known for their commitment to safety, and the C70 features a very comprehensive package of features
including dual front airbags, side impact airbags, inflatable side curtain airbags, Roll-Over Protection, and Whiplash Protection to keep
passengers safe in a collision. A standard Dynamic Stability and Traction Control system enhances stability in slippery conditions and provides
extra traction in inclement weather. The optional Blind Spot Information System uses rear-facing digital cameras to detect cars in your blind
spot with a warning signal on the front door post. Available front and rear park assist makes it easier to park or maneuver the vehicle in close
quarters.
The unique three-split Retractable Hardtop opens or closes in less than 30 seconds with the push of a button.
Inside the stylish cabin, an available Premium Sound System includes 12 Dynaudio® speakers, a MP3/WMA compatible CD player, amplifier, Dolby®
Digital Sound, and auxiliary audio input for your iPod® create a venerable concertlike sound. An optional Volvo Navigation System with Hard Disc
Drive, DVD Map Data, and remote control guides you with an easy-to-read 6.5" color screen and provides detailed maps and directions. A variety of
leather upholsteries and available heated front seats wrap occupants in warmth and luxury.
Luxurious, refined, and safe, the 2008 Volvo C70 is a hardtop convertible that is perfect for all-season
top-down motoring.
Ford Mustang & Volvo C70 Comparison
Handling
With its rear-wheel drive layout, the Ford Mustang likely has better weight distribution than the Volvo C70;
however, the Volvo C70's front-wheel drive layout likely provides better traction in rain, snow or ice. The Volvo and the Mustang have roughly
similar tires. With its tighter turning radius, the Ford Mustang is doubtless more agile than the Volvo C70, something to consider if you do a
lot of city driving; on the flip side, note that a vehicle with a tight turning circle may feel a bit twitchy on the highway.
Drivetrain
The Ford Mustang has a bigger engine than the C70. Remember that smaller engines typically get better gas
mileage, but smaller engines can be stressed more. The Volvo C70 has no lessons to learn in terms of torque from the Ford Mustang.
Utility
Neither the Ford nor the Volvo C70 has a marked advantage in terms of seating capacity. The Volvo outpulls the
Ford Mustang by a big margin.
Convenience
The Mustang's fuel tank will need to be replenished somewhat more often than the unit in the Volvo C70. You'll
doubtless have to take the Ford for a fill-up more often than the C70 because of its tank size and fuel economy.
Comfort
While the front cabin in the Mustang offers a bit more head room than the Volvo C70, there frankly isn't much
of a difference. The ampler interior dimensions of the Volvo make it substantially more spacious for your passengers than the Mustang.
Dimensions
The Volvo C70 is significantly more ponderous than the Ford Mustang. The Ford's tank is approximately the same
size as the Volvo C70's, though the Volvo C70's is a little larger. The Volvo C70 and the Ford Mustang compete for the same parking
spaces.
Cost
The destination charge is a standard charge for transporting the vehicle from its point of origin to the
dealer. It costs about the same to get the Volvo to the dealership as the Ford. The Volvo won't save you much money at the pump compared to the
Ford Mustang. The Ford Mustang pales in comparison to the Volvo in terms of gas mileage. With respect to fuel economy, the Volvo C70 is a little
better than the Ford Mustang, but not by much. Producing a precise fuel economy evaluation is so difficult that some think not even the federal
government can do it, but it looks as though both the Volvo C70 and the Volvo C70 perform about similarly when it comes to fuel economy. With
respect to MSRP, the Ford Mustang costs tremendously less than the Volvo C70. Regarding final price, the Volvo costs tremendously more than the
Ford Mustang.
Overview
The basic after-sale protection that comes with the Ford Mustang isn't quite as generous as the Volvo
C70's.
