Chevrolet Corvette vs. Ford Mustang
Chevrolet Corvette Overview
One of the best performance bargains on the planet, the 2008 Chevrolet Corvette combines the power of a pure
American muscle car with sophisticated handling dynamics, offering performance that bests many exotic supercars with much heftier price
tags.
Available as a sleek coupe, an open-air convertible, or the scorching Z06 coupe, the Corvette appeals to
enthusiasts who want everything from a leisurely drive by the lakeshore to a road-ripping day at the track. A brand-new 6.2 liter V8 engine is
standard in the coupe and convertible, producing 430 horsepower and 424 lb.-ft of torque. Things get a lot more serious with the 7.0 liter V8
engine in the Z06, with 505 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque. Both engines come with a short-throw six-speed manual transmission. A six-speed
automatic with paddle shift is available on the coupe and convertible.
With that kind of power, you’d expect world-class brakes and suspension, and the Corvette does not disappoint.
Four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes are standard on coupes and convertibles, while the Z06 offers six-piston front and four-piston rear calipers
with cross-drilled rotors for unparalleled stopping ability. Active handling is standard on all models, maximizing the driver’s ability to
maintain stability and stay on track. Magnetic Selective Ride Control has two cockpit settings, Tour and Sport, adjusting shock-absorber damping
in real time to respond to changing road and driving conditions. For 2008, the steering has been recalibrated to offer better
response.
The Coupe has a removable roof panel, offering an open-air cockpit. The Convertible has a standard manual
folding top or an optional power folding top, both with a glass rear window and integral defogger. All models have high-intensity discharge
headlamps for superior nighttime visibility. For audiophiles, an AM/FM stereo with CD/MP3 player and seven speakers is standard, with a powerful
Bose® audio system available for serious music lovers. An available voice-activated navigation system is easy and intuitive, and includes XM®
Satellite Radio.
The 2008 Chevrolet Corvette is nothing short of a blast to drive. In one package, you get amazing performance,
a comfortable interior, and the throaty rumble that comes only from a big, American V8 engine.
Ford Mustang & Chevrolet Corvette Comparison
Cost
The destination charge is a standard charge for transporting the vehicle from its point of origin to the
dealer. It costs approximately the same to get the Ford Mustang to the dealership as the Chevrolet Corvette. There frankly isn't much of a
difference in gas mileage here, but if you must know, the Ford Mustang is somewhat more economical than the Chevrolet Corvette. The Ford Mustang
won't tax your gasoline budget considerably more than the Chevrolet Corvette will. Producing a precise fuel economy evaluation is so difficult
that some think not even the federal government can do it, but it looks as though both the Ford Mustang and the Ford Mustang perform
approximately similarly when it comes to gas mileage. The Ford Mustang is tremendously less expensive than the Chevrolet Corvette with respect to
MSRP. In terms of out-the-door cost, the Ford Mustang costs tremendously less than the Chevrolet.
Utility
The Ford Mustang will indubitably prove friendlier than the Chevrolet Corvette for those of you with frequent
child-cargo.
Convenience
You'll quite certainly take the Ford Mustang for a fill-up about as often as the Chevrolet Corvette. You
definitely won't have to visit your friendly gas station more often with the Ford Mustang than with the Chevrolet Corvette, because both offer
comparable ranges. The Ford Mustang's fuel tank will need to be replenished a bit more often than the unit in the Chevrolet Corvette.
Comfort
While the front cabin in the Ford Mustang offers a bit more head room than the Chevrolet Corvette, there really
isn't much of a difference.
Dimensions
The Ford Mustang is a bit heavier than the Chevrolet Corvette. The Ford Mustang's tank is approximately the
same size as the Chevrolet Corvette's, though the Chevrolet Corvette's is a little bigger. The Chevrolet Corvette and the Ford Mustang compete
for the same parking spaces.
Performance
As far as horsepower, the Chevrolet Corvette packs quite a punch and will knock the Mustang down a few rungs.
However, remember that high horsepower engines often command higher insurance premiums.
Handling
The Chevrolet has substantially bigger tires than the Ford Mustang. Remember that wider tires could look and
feel better, while smaller tires can improve gas mileage. With its tighter turning circle, the Mustang is quite certainly more agile than the
Chevrolet Corvette, something to consider if you do a lot of city driving; on the other hand, remember that a vehicle with a tight turning circle
may feel a bit twitchy on the highway.
Drivetrain
The Ford Mustang's engine is markedly smaller than the Chevrolet Corvette's. Keep in mind that smaller engines
can be stressed more; on the flip side, smaller engines are often cheaper to fix. The Chevrolet Corvette packs quite a punch compared to the Ford
Mustang in terms of torque, which is the force that lets you accelerate quickly. Torque is roughly equivalent to acceleration, and in this
respect, the Chevrolet Corvette is tremendously more powerful than the Ford Mustang.
Overview
The Chevrolet Corvette and the Mustang have the same basic after-sale protection.
Other
The Chevrolet Corvette produces fewer smog-forming pollutants per 15,000 miles than the Ford.
