Porsche Boxster vs. Ford Mustang
Porsche Boxster Overview
There are a variety of superlatives that the 2008 Porsche Boxster conjures: exhilarating, dynamic, balanced, and pure. As a
mid-engined, two-seat, rear-wheel drive roadster, it embodies a pure driving experience and offers a real connection between the driver and
the automobile.
Available as the standard Boxster, the sharper, more powerful Boxster S, or a new Limited Edition Boxster, it offers a driving
experience that is nothing short of visceral. The fun begins with a 2.7 liter flat six-cylinder engine with 245 horsepower and 201 lb.-ft.
of torque for entertaining acceleration. Boxster S models ramp things up with a 3.4 liter flat six-cylinder engine producing 295 horsepower
and 251 lb.-ft. of torque for excellent off-the-line and high-speed thrust. Either engine can be mated to a silky 6-speed manual
transmission or a world-class Tiptronic transmission that offers five gearshift patterns and manual shifting ability without a traditional
clutch.
The braking system is truly formidable with a standard Anti-lock braking system, 4-piston monobloc fixed alloy calipers and
4-wheel ventilated disc brakes which imbue the Boxster with supreme braking power and minimize wheel lockup. An available Bi-Xenon lighting
system with washer system creates greater illumination than the standard halogen bulbs while using less power. Standard Porsche Stability
Management uses a range of sensors and Automatic Brake Differential and Anti-Slip Regulation to maintain traction and stability during
evasive maneuvers. The optional Sport Chrono Package offers selectable driving modes that tune the Boxster to satisfy your driving
demands.
The new Limited Edition Boxster is available in either trim level and features a race inspired 911 GT3 RS-Orange finish, black
wheels and exterior mirrors, and roll-over bars in orange among other unique interior features. Standard Boxster features include a power
convertible top with a heated glass rear window that opens or closes in 12 seconds. An optional hardtop is made from robust aluminum and
offers all-weather protection.
Inside, the Boxster feature standard automatic full climate control, an available BOSEĀ® Surround Sound System and CDR-24 CD radio
for amazing sound quality, and the standard Porsche Communication Management system, which integrates the stereo system, trip computer, and
available GPS navigation system. A choice of available Sports Seats, Adaptive Sports Seats, or Sports Bucket Seats offer excellent support
and comfort.
Embodying the pure roadster spirit, the 2008 Porsche Boxster offers thrills and excitement best experienced on a long stretch of
open road.
Ford Mustang & Porsche Boxster ComparisonUtility
Drivers with frequent kid-duty might favor the Ford Mustang over the Porsche.
Performance
When it comes to horsepower, the Porsche Boxster packs quite a wallop and will knock the Ford Mustang down a few rungs. On the
other hand, keep in mind that high horsepower engines often command higher insurance premiums.
Dimensions
The Ford Mustang's tank is roughly the same size as the Porsche Boxster's, though the Porsche Boxster's is a tad more capacious.
The Porsche and the Ford Mustang compete for the same parking spaces. The Porsche Boxster's shorter wheelbase will give a more agile feel
in daily traffic. However, the Mustang is likely to have a smoother, more stable ride.
Convenience
The Ford's fuel tank will need to be replenished somewhat more often than the unit in the Porsche Boxster. You doubtless won't
have to visit your friendly gas station more often with the Ford Mustang than with the Porsche Boxster, as both offer similar
ranges.
Cost
The destination charge is a standard charge for transporting the vehicle from its point of origin to the dealer. It costs roughly
the same to get the Ford Mustang to the dealership as the Porsche Boxster. The Ford Mustang won't save you much money at the pump compared
to the Boxster. In terms of fuel economy, the Boxster and the Ford Mustang don't differ much. The Porsche Boxster won't tax your gas budget
considerably more than the Ford will. When it comes to MSRP, the Ford costs tremendously less than the Porsche Boxster. The Boxster is
tremendously more expensive than the Mustang as far as purchase cost.
Handling
The Porsche Boxster has significantly bigger tires than the Ford Mustang. Keep in mind that bigger tires can improve handling,
while narrower tires can improve gas mileage. With its tighter turning radius, the Ford Mustang is definitely nimbler than the Porsche
Boxster, something to consider if you do a lot of city driving; however, note that a vehicle with a tight turning circle may feel a bit
twitchy on the highway.
Drivetrain
The Ford Mustang's engine is quite a bit bigger than the Porsche Boxster's. Keep in mind that more massive engines may use more
gasoline than smaller ones.
Overview
The basic warranty that comes with the Ford Mustang isn't quite as generous as the Porsche's.
