Saab 9-3 vs. Ford Mustang
Saab 9-3 Overview
The thoroughly refreshed 2008 Saab 9-3 offers tweaked styling this year, increased turbo power, and the option
of XWD – Saab’s new all-wheel drive system.
Available in three body styles – Sports Sedan, Convertible, and SportCombi (wagon) – the new 9-3 offers
excellent handling and ample cargo room. All body styles are available in two trim lines, the 2.0T and powerful Aero. 2.0T models feature a 2.0
liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine with 210 horsepower and ample thrust. It’s mated to a standard 6-speed manual transmission or a 5-speed
automatic with manual mode that offers smooth gear changes. Aero models boast a 2.8 liter turbocharged 6-cylinder engine making 255 horsepower
mated to the 6-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic transmission with manumatic shifting ability. Standard front-wheel drive offers excellent
all-season handling, while the new available XWD "cross-wheel drive" system for sedans and wagons offers all-wheel drive capability and a limited
slip differential to aid handling, stability, and traction on a variety of road surfaces.
An abundance of safety features includes 4-wheel disc brakes with power assist, an Anti-lock Braking System,
Electronic Brake-force Distribution, and Mechanical Brake Assist for powerful stopping ability and fade-resistant performance after repeated
stops. To enhance stability and prevent wheelspin, the 9-3 features a standard Traction Control System and Electronic Stability Program. Standard
adaptive dual front airbags, front seat torso side airbags, and head-curtain side airbags offer excellent passenger protection in a collision. A
standard Tire Pressure Monitoring System alerts the driver to any significant changes in inflation pressure. Available Xenon cornering headlamps
offer excellent illumination and pivot as the vehicle turns.
Convertible models feature a new standard remote-open cloth convertible top that provides a panoramic view with
the push of a button. Inside, a Bose® Centerpoint Surround Sound system with XM® Satellite Radio, 10 speakers, a 6-disc CD changer, and auxiliary
audio input for your iPod® offers wonderful sound quality. The optional DVD-based Navigation System provides turn-by-turn directions, detailed
maps, and points of interest to guide you on your journey.
Whether you want cargo space, passenger flexibility, or open-air thrills, the new 2008 Saab 9-3 will deliver
with turbocharged power, top-notch handling, and a wealth of safety features.
Ford Mustang & Saab 9-3 Comparison
Cost
The destination charge is a standard charge for transporting the vehicle from its point of origin to the
dealer. The Mustang is significantly cheaper to get to the dealership than the Saab 9-3. There frankly isn't much of a difference in gas mileage
here, but if you must know, the Saab is a tad more economical than the Mustang. Regarding gas mileage, the Saab 9-3 and the Ford Mustang don't
differ much. In terms of MSRP, the Ford Mustang costs tremendously less than the Saab 9-3. The Mustang is substantially less costly than the 9-3
when it comes to out-the-door cost.
Utility
The Saab 9-3's more massive trunk will accommodate more massive objects than the Mustang. Neither the Ford
Mustang nor the Saab has a marked advantage regarding seating capacity.
Convenience
You'll most definitely take the Ford Mustang for a fill-up about as often as the Saab 9-3. The Ford's fuel tank
will need to be replenished a bit more often than the unit in the Saab 9-3.
Comfort
Taller drivers will quite a bit enjoy the extra head room in the Saab 9-3's front cabin compared to the Ford
Mustang. The Saab 9-3 provides more head- and leg-room to your passengers than the Mustang does.
Dimensions
The Ford Mustang's tank is about the same size as the Saab's, though the Saab 9-3's is slightly more capacious.
The Saab 9-3 and the Ford Mustang compete for the same parking spaces.
Handling
With its rear-wheel drive layout, the Ford Mustang likely has better dry traction than the Saab 9-3; on the
flip side, the Saab 9-3's front-wheel drive layout likely provides better traction in rain, snow or ice. With their comparable turning radiuses,
the Ford Mustang and the Saab 9-3 very likely handle about the same into and out of tight spots.
Drivetrain
The Ford Mustang's engine is tremendously larger than the Saab 9-3's. Note that more massive engines may use
more gas than smaller ones. The Saab 9-3 could learn a lesson or two from the Ford in terms of torque.
Overview
The basic after-sale protection that comes with the Ford Mustang isn't quite as generous as the Saab
9-3's.
