BMW M vs. Ford Mustang
BMW M Overview
Focused performance is the hallmark of the 2008 BMW M series. Available as the Z4 M Coupe or Z4 M Roadster, they both offer
unshakable stability, vicious straight-line acceleration, and aggressive, unique styling.
Both models boast the vaunted 3.2 liter inline 6-cylinder engine that generates 330 horsepower and effortless thrust. The standard
6-speed manual transmission with a heavy-duty clutch has a light effort and positive feel for rapid-fire shifting. The rear-wheel drive
layout provides superior dry road handling characteristics.
Standard adaptive brake lights illuminate brighter as brake force is increased to help other drivers anticipate your impending
stop. Dual front airbags, dual side-impact airbags, Active Knee Protection, and rollover protection (in convertibles) protect both
occupants in a collision or rollover. Standard Cornering Brake Control offers additional control and stability in evasive maneuvers. Xenon
headlights with auto-leveling come standard, offering enhanced illumination and visibility. 4-wheel anti-lock ventilated disc brakes offer
amazing stopping power and help prevent wheel lockup.
Standard 18" double-spoke light alloy wheels look and perform beautifully. The fully automatic power softtop in the Z4 M
Convertible raises or lowers in seconds with the push of a button. The available 8-way power front seats with 3-stage heating make the
drive comfortable and warm for both occupants. An optional premium audio system includes upgraded audio power, 10 speakers, 2 subwoofers,
and an available iPod® interface that offer amazing flexibility and sound. BMW Assist with Bluetooth® wireless enables hands-free calling,
phonebook downloading, and speech recognition so you can focus on the drive at hand.
In either coupe or convertible form, the 2008 BMW M series puts performance first, without losing its focus on comfort and
luxury.
Ford Mustang & BMW M ComparisonPerformance
With that kind of horsepower, the M is a full-blown speedster.
Handling
The BMW has substantially bigger tires than the Ford. Keep in mind that bigger tires could improve handling, while smaller tires
might improve gas mileage. With their comparable turning circles, the Ford and the BMW M likely handle about the same into and out of tight
spots.
Drivetrain
The Mustang has a larger engine than the BMW M. Remember that smaller engines typically get better gas mileage, but smaller
engines can be stressed more. Torque is roughly equivalent to acceleration, and in this respect, the BMW M isn't much more powerful than
the Ford.
Utility
The Ford Mustang will most definitely prove handier than the BMW M for those of you with frequent kid-cargo.
Convenience
The BMW M's fuel tank will need to be replenished more often than the unit in the Mustang. You will have to visit your friendly
gas station more often with the BMW than with the Ford Mustang.
Comfort
Taller drivers will substantially enjoy the extra head room in the Ford Mustang's front cabin compared to the M.
Dimensions
The Ford Mustang is somewhat heavier than the M. The BMW's tank is about the same size as the Ford Mustang's, though the Ford
Mustang's is slightly larger. The BMW fits in smaller parking spaces than the Ford Mustang. The Ford's longer wheelbase will likely result
in a smoother, more stable ride; on the flip side, the M may give a sprier feel in daily traffic.
Cost
The destination charge is a standard charge for transporting the vehicle from its point of origin to the dealer. It costs
approximately the same to get the BMW to the dealership as the Ford Mustang. The BMW M pales in comparison to the Mustang as far as fuel
economy. The Mustang will save you money at the pump compared to the M. The Ford is tremendously less costly than the BMW as far as MSRP.
When it comes to final cost, the Ford Mustang costs tremendously less than the BMW M.
Overview
The basic after-sale protection that comes with the Ford Mustang isn't quite as generous as the BMW M's.
